In some countries, the electricity market is completely open to competition, while in others it is monopolized. Where is electricity cheaper and why? Are there examples of successful liberalization that has led to price reductions?

In countries with liberalised markets, competition between suppliers can drive down prices, but in times of crisis, electricity costs rise faster than in regulated economies. An example of successful liberalisation is Scandinavia, where consumers can choose their supplier. If you want to follow prices in real time, use Elpris Idag. In other countries (such as the UK), however, sharp price increases cause problems.
